Getting to Udaipur

Udaipur is served by Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR), with domestic connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and other major Indian cities. Most travelers arrive either by a short domestic flight, or by road from Jaipur — roughly a 6-7 hour drive, often broken up with a stop at Chittorgarh Fort en route. Udaipur is also well connected by rail, with an overnight train option from Delhi.

When to Visit Udaipur

October to March is Udaipur's most comfortable season, with pleasant daytime temperatures well suited to lake cruises and palace visits. Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake are also at their fullest and most photogenic in the months right after the monsoon (October-December), which is the best window specifically for boat rides. April to June brings intense heat; July to September is the monsoon, when the lakes fill but sightseeing can be interrupted by rain.

What Makes Udaipur Different

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the new capital of the Kingdom of Mewar, after the previous capital at Chittorgarh had been repeatedly besieged — its lakes were chosen deliberately as a natural defensive and water-security advantage, not just for their beauty.

City Palace is still described by Udaipur's royal family as a living palace, with parts of it privately maintained rather than run purely as a museum, which is part of why it feels different from other Rajasthan forts you may visit on the same trip.
