Getting to Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer Airport (JSA) has limited, mostly seasonal domestic flights, so most travelers instead take an overnight train from Jaipur or Delhi, or drive in from Jodhpur — roughly a 5-6 hour, 285 km journey along a well-maintained highway. Jaisalmer is almost always visited as an extension at the end of a Jodhpur-based itinerary rather than a standalone flight destination.
When to Visit Jaisalmer
October to March is strongly recommended — Jaisalmer sits in the Thar Desert and its summer heat is more extreme than almost anywhere else in Rajasthan, regularly exceeding 45°C between April and June. December and January bring cool nights, which matters if you're booking an overnight desert camp. Monsoon season (July-September) is light here since it's true desert, but midday heat remains a factor even then.
Top Attractions in Jaisalmer

Desert Safari→ Read more
The signature Jaisalmer experience: a camel or jeep safari into the dunes, often paired with an overnight stay at a desert camp with folk music, Kalbelia dance and stargazing.
Gadisar Lake→ Read more
A 14th-century reservoir built by Maharawal Gadsi Singh, ringed by temples, cenotaphs and carved gateways — a calm, photogenic stop after the fort's crowds.
What Makes Jaisalmer Different
Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal as a trading post on the caravan routes linking India with Central Asia and the Middle East — the wealth from that trade is what funded the city's elaborately carved havelis, not royal patronage alone as in Jaipur or Udaipur.
Jaisalmer Fort is genuinely still lived in — a working town inside a 12th-century fort, not a museum piece — which is part of why it's counted among the very few "living forts" left anywhere in the world.
Every itinerary here is built around comfort, meaningful access and pacing that allows each setting to breathe, rather than rushing between checklist stops.
